Summer Driving and Rental car insurance

Summer Driving and Rental car insurance

Before starting your summer road trips, you must remember a few things about car insurance and rental cars.

Put the auto insurance identification card in the car. Double Check that the contact numbers of your insurance company and agent are written on the identification card. If contact information is missing, then note down the numbers and carry them with your ID card.

If Something bad happens to someone, one can follow the following instructions:

  • Remain calm.
  • Check for any injuries and give first aid, if required.
  • Inform the proper authorities and tell them of any injuries. Despite the incident, report the accident to the police.
  • Note down the name, address, and cell number of details of the other driver. Also, get the make, model, and license plate number of all vehicles involved .
  • Note the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all passengers and eyewitnesses.
  • Take photos of the accident scene, if feasible.
  • Get a copy of the police report or you may ask the Investigating officer
  • Inform your insurance company or agent as soon as possible.

Rental Cars

If your car was damaged due to another driver’s carelessness, the other driver’s insurance company should pay your rental car costs for a reasonable period of repair time. If your car is totally damaged, many companies will pay for your rental as a courtesy, but they are not required to do so if you do not have  a rental insurance coverage in your policy.

If you are initiating a claim with your own insurance company, the cost of a rental car will be covered if you paid a premium to add rental car reimbursement coverage in your policy. Most policies have a dollar limit for rental payments, so verify your policy.

Things to remember about Insurance, while renting a Car

Car rental companies offer various  insurance options that your existing car insurance policy may cover. They typically offer the below products at the counter:

  • Collision Damage Waiver is also known as a Loss Damage Waiver. If you have comprehensive and collision coverage on your own car, you will probably not need this additional protection. (Comprehensive insurance covers vehicular damages caused by accidents such as fire, theft, wind, hail, a run-in with animals, vandalism, or theft. Collision insurance covers the cost of repairs or the cash value of the vehicle, if it is damaged in a collision or rollover.) This protection can cost an extra $12 to $20 a day.
  • Liability Insurance covers  medical expenses and losses to another person’s property as a result of a car accident caused by the insured’s negligence. If you are well-insured on your own car, you may consider waiving this extra liability protection. This supplemental insurance can cost $9-$14 for a single day.
  • Personal Accident Insurance offers coverage to the renter and passengers for medical bills ensuing from a car crash. If you have sufficient health insurance and disability pension insurance, or are covered by personal injury protection under your own car insurance, you will likely remove this coverage from the policy. It usually costs about $2-$5 a day.
  • Personal Effects Coverage provides for the theft of personal belongings inside the rental car. It is generally covered by homeowners’ or renter’s insurance policy. If you frequently travel with expensive items such as jewelry or sports equipment, it may be cost-effective to purchase an insurance policy called floater under your home or renter’s insurance policies so the belongings are fully protected when you travel.  Floater policy covers easily movable properties. Generally, this coverage costs $1.5-$5 a day
